MeiLi & Robert A. Hefner III have recently acquired another of Ju Ming’s Taichi Series
A superb example of Ju Ming's Taichi series, the sculpture is a large scale standing bronze, poised in a ready to strike stance. Based on the traditional practice of Taichi - or Chinese shadowboxing - the work reflects a textured contemporary aesthetic with Ju Ming's characteristic uneven planed surfaces while retaining a strong sense of oriental philosophy and respect for universal balance. Arms upraised, the figure appears to be lithe and tense, his full concentration on the mastery of his quick, fluid, forward lunging attack. Although large in size and cast out of heavy bronze, the Taichi work possesses a certain grace and fluidity, evoking the impression of continuous flowing movements despite being caught in stasis. The figure radiates energy and contemplation, intent on the flowing, forceful strokes of his practice, standing firmly rooted to the ground and merging his form with the earth. It is almost possible to sense the gravity of his attention as he transfers his weight from one leg to the other in the seamless sequence of Taichi movements. Already acclaimed for his Nativist works, the Taichi series solidified Ju Ming's reputation as a master contemporary sculptor, a "Rodin of the East". Crafted through the rigorous mental and physical discipline of sculptor and Taichi practitioner alike, this monumental work is a testament to the aspirations and strength of the modern spirit.
